Five Key Elements of a Successful Resume

 1.      Clear Objective

Many people don’t put an objective on their resume because they aren’t sure what they want to do. If you don’t know, an employer isn’t going to take the time to figure it out. Employers have a specific position to fill, and by clearly stating your objective you help them know where you’ll fit.

The objective must be the most focused statement on your resume. It also should be realistic. If you have a job description your are applying to, your objective should include or restate the position title.

2.      Clear Summary Statement

Employers are busy. Your resume will probably get a 10 second look before they decide to keep it or pitch it in the circular file. That’s why a succinct summary statement is so important. Tell an employer what you can do for his or her organization.

3.      List effectively your training/education

In many career field, it’s more important to have current certification that a liberal arts degree that’s 10 years old.

4.      Focus on results rather than just job descriptions

Many resumes list positions and performance objectives but not accomplishments. An employer wants to know how well you executed your responsibilities. Present your most significant positions and accomplishments as they relate to the job you’re seeking, focusing on the last five to eight years so your skills do not seem dated.

5.      Make a professional looking resume

A cardinal sin in resume writing is misspelling a word; poorly constructed sentences, and bad verb usage run a close second. USE your computer’s spell-check, but don’t rely on it alone. Read, reread, and ask friends to read your resume before you send it to anyone.

6.      Summary

There is no perfect format for a resume and everyone has an opinion on how to write one, so don’t spend your life polishing your resume. Definitely don’t pay anyone else to write your resume: you will be the only one at the interview to defend it, so you must be the one to write it.
